Curacao offers very good ocean sailing and flatwater. Within confined lakes like the Spanish Waters and st Joris anyone can work on their skills. On the open ocean advanced sailors can battle the ocean swells, which on good days can reach 10ft! However be warned, the strong westerly currents and the side-offshore winds will challange even the highly trained windsurfers. Make sure you point upwind the first rounds out.
When open ocean sailing always make sure your safe!
  • Never go out alone
  • Always make sure someone who stays ashore knows you are out. Make sure this person knows what to do when you don't contact him/her on a agreed time.
  • If your kit breaks down, NEVER LEAVE YOUR BOARD!.
  • If your kit breaks down, make sure you keep a peace of your mast.
(So you can draw attention with it.)
  • Never go too far out. Make sure you are in visible range of you buddy.
  • Remember to regulary check on your buddy that he's standing.
  • When in doubt.... don't go out.

Spanish Waters: Tank 14
This is the location of Windsurfing Curacao, where freestylers try to proove their supremecy on the water. Tank 14 lies all the way downwind on the Spanish Waters. From Tank 14, you can also launch on the Caracas Bay when the wind kicks into high gear. Tank 14 is accessible from Baya Beach on the Caracas bay penisula. Go left immediatly when you pass the gate.
Spanish Waters: Storm Plas
The Storm Plas, as the name suggest has the hardest wind on the spanish waters. It's the most upwind part of the Spanish Waters. On the Storm Plas you can freeride your hearth out. Access to the Storm Plas is either an upwinder from Tank or trough Jan Sofat.
Jan Thiel (Zanzibar)
Jan Thiel offers access to the ocean. Allthough the launching point is not ideal, (Either over the rocks or trough a windless channel) the beach itself has plenty to do. A great bar and restaurant with a cool children water playground.
Directors Bay (Caracas bay penisula)
Through the gate at Baya you can find this secluded divers beach. With a nice windsurfing/ snorkeling/ diving combo. Afterwards, dine in the Duke's restaurant.
Caracas bay
Just left of Caracas bay is a public beach. From there you can launch straight out to sea. Nice local food available right on the spot. Sometimes, however, a parked oilrig or ship can block the wind (and the view).
St Joris
Flat water heaven. This spot is an inland lake, totaly secluded in the north-east part of the island. Surrounded by the ostrich farm and the aloe vera plantation. A small mouth connects it to the ocean on the north shore. Here wavesailing might be possible. Watch out for the shallow reef when trying this!
Mariot Hotel
This spot catches the better waves when the wind and swell come on. If you're unable to sneak through the hotel try the public beach next to it.
